Artist Statement

Centering around bodily reactions and memory, Laura Bochet’s (b. 1986, Buffalo, NY) work considers the relationship between connection and communication and how the feeling of closeness translates into memory. Flashes of eye contact and waves of color dominant the compositions; distant faces appear and just as quickly disappear. Positioning the viewer as both the observer and the observed, her work engages a silent conversation that recollects feelings of closeness, longing and nostalgia.

A Hudson Valley based painter and tattoo artist, Laura Bochet has devoted her life to creating art and using it as a means of connection and healing. She combines obscured feminine portraiture with ethereal landscapes and ghostly abstractions to evoke a liminal space where emotion lingers, memory flickers, and the boundaries between self and other dissolve.
